Move over Joe Wicks, Mary's here!

Northern Irelands Lady Mary Peters, famous for bringing home a Gold for the pentathlon at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, has launched a series of online exercise videos for those who are elderly and have serious health conditions due to lockdown inactivity.

We already know that the elderly are at increased risk of muscle wastage through staying at home, but the organisation AGE NI have also discovered that over 40% are concerned for both their physical and mental well being.

Lady Mary Peters launches ‘Move with Mary’ online exercise videos.

Mary says, “To me, movement is life; it’s so important to keep active as you get older. These exercises are nice and gentle and, trust me, they will help you to feel good during this difficult period of lockdown. Hopefully we can create a little virtual community of what I’m calling my ‘golden oldies’ all doing these daily workouts together.”

The series of videos is available online now and is suitable for any ability and capacity, from seated movements to stretches and balance and even gentle aerobic activity suitable for the elderly.

Chief Executive of Age NI, Linda Robinson explained, “The British Geriatrics Society has warned that ‘lockdown and social distancing measures have led to dangerously low levels of physical activity in older people, which, if not addressed as a matter of urgency, will prove to be detrimental to their physical and mental health’. Our real concern is that this is storing up the next health crisis for our older population. We need to do all we can to avoid further loss of independence or the need for additional medical treatment in the future.”
